Liverpool LFC |
Conditions were quite difficult for both teams on a windy day but the pitch at St Andrews FC was in excellent condition to compensate. Both teams tested each other in the first 15 minutes with Liverpool having the closest chance after a quick throw saw a shot palmed onto the post and then into the hands of Mary Earps. On 25 minutes a Leicester corner was headed just wide by Lauren Handley. This was followed by a good passage of play which saw the same player shooting wide after a fine cross from Leanne Morley. The final chance of the half came to the foxes after a penetrating through ball from Jodie Taylor saw good pressure from the Liverpool goalkeeper force a shot wide from Brogan Jones. A close first half ended 0-0. An early substitution in the second half for Leicester resulted in the first goal. Leanne Griffin's first touch from a Nicole Dale corner took her away from the Liverpool defence and was placed accurately into the far right of the Liverpool goal to make it 1-0. Just 2 minutes later saw a quick throw to Brogan Jones played back to Leanne Griffin and crossed early into the Liverpool area, Nicole Dale managed to get in front of the Liverpool centre half and clipped a shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-0. This forced Liverpool into a number of changes resulting in the Leicester defence facing a three pronged attack for the remainder of the half. A direct free kick from Nicole Dale went just wide on 15 minutes followed shortly after by a shot wide from Brogan Jones. Liverpool had a number of chances in the second half but all were from distance and dealt with comfortably by Mary Earps in the foxes goal. Hard work and determination in midfield with support from all areas of the Leicester team kept Liverpool constantly under pressure and ultimately resulted in Leicester seeing out the rest of the second half to come away with an excellent 2-0 home win. Leicester Reserves now look forward to a quarter final draw that includes Arsenal, Everton, Birmingham, Leeds Bristol, Watford and Chelsea.
