Preston North End WFC |
City entertained Preston for the second time in two weeks, this time it was the 1st Round of the Premier League Cup and the visitors were up for it as the Foxes had overpowered them 5-0 in the league. North End started brightly and had City in disarray with some neat football and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 9 minutes when good work by Hannah Bailey found Sam Cadwallader who coolly netted. The same player nearly added number two but City’s inspiring keeper , Leanne Hall, made a fine save to push the ball around for a corner and Hall again had to palm the flag kick away from underneath the bar. Things went from bad to worse for City when Alison Taberner made it two nil just before the interval and they thoroughly deserved their lead. The Foxes huffed and puffed but couldn’t find ways around the Preston back line in what was a pretty poor first half performance by City. Whatever the management said or was it extra sugar in the tea, the team came out in a more determined mood to try and repair the damage. It exploded into life when City’s midfielder, Chloe Jones rifled home from 30 yards out to give them hope and the lift they needed. Their play was much better playing a high tempo game with quick passing and movement off the ball. The confident Courtney Sweetman-Kirk took the Preston back line on to slot home the equaliser and turn the tie on its head. City powered forward with winger, Natalie Reay getting more joy down City’s right and Jones marshalling the troops around her. Sweetman-Kirk won a corner for City, she took the flag kick herself, it was a superb in-swinging corner that caught their keeper, Emma Reader, and their defenders out as it just went over the line which the linesman flagged for a goal to put City’s noses in front for the first time in the match. The trick now was could they hold onto it as they worked hard for each other. The Foxes introduced Katie Lowder and debutant Kirsty Robson to add a bit of pace and flair. With the 90 minutes up the City keeper, Hall had to pull the rabbit out of the hat in what was a truly magnificent save from Sarah McCrea to put City through to the next round.
Squad – Leanne Hall, Hannah Williams, Lauren Impey, Katie McLoughlin, Leah Rawle, Chloe Jones, Rachel Stowell, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, Nicole Dale, Natasha Meade, Natalie Reay, Katie Lowder, Destiney Toussaint, Kirsty Robson, Jemma Butler. |
