Leicester City WFC 5 v Luton Town LFC 0
FA Women’s Premier League – Northern Division
City started what was to be a feisty encounter with a real zip about them at Blaby Scout HQ. A quick start from City saw Natasha Meade get down the left flank to deliver a ball into the front post where Courtney Sweetman-Kirk flicked on a clever header to beat Luton Keeper Nikki Duncan but not the post in the first 2 minutes of the game. The next 10 minutes saw several exchanges around the pitch with both teams weighing each other up. Luton had a chance on 16 minutes when a long central ball was hit with Hannah Williams being tested 1 v 1 as Leanne Hall came out of goal to smother the ball Williams was penalised for an infringement on the edge of the box. The resulting free kick to Luton went straight into Hall’s hands. Shortly after the Hatters Jade McEntaggart found a shooting opportunity 30 yards out hitting a fierce shot that hit the underside of the bar bouncing back out to the oncoming Josephine Scully who headed over from close range. City regrouped and broke forward down the left with Katie Lowder providing a low firm cross which Meade dummied across the front post for Natalie Reay to come in and slot home settling the Foxes on 17 minutes. City continued the attacks with some great work through the middle where Chloe Jones and Rachel Stowell were starting to dominate. A Luton attack came on 29 minutes which Hall claimed early and played to Sweetman-Kirk who opened out early and played an inch perfect 50 yards diagonal ball to Meade who drove in the box and smashed home for the second. Not long after the second goal a head injury to Lekeisha Gumbs delayed play for 20 minutes whilst an ambulance arrived unsettling play for both teams. Youngster Katie McLoughlin replaced Gumbs and set to her task on the restart very well. The game reverted to the first 10 minutes after the restart seeing half time come with no further incident or major goalscoring opportunity for either team.
The second half saw City edge the early exchanges and some neat passages of play gave chances to Lowder, Meade and Sweetman-Kirk. Luton kept battling and a quick through ball saw Zira Handley recover quickly and make a perfectly timed tackle to stop a shot coming at Hall. The back line of Williams, Handley, McLoughlin and Leah Rawle were becoming more secure as the game went on with a great work rate being put in by the two centre halves commanding any forward attempts by Luton. On 57 minutes Kirsty Robson was introduced and made an instant impact getting down the right flank to deliver a deep cross to Sweetman-Kirk who headed wide of the goal. Meade was the next to combine with Robson this time playing her through on goal but Robson’s shot was well saved by Luton GK, Duncan who performed really well second half for the Hatters. The foxes increased their lead when Handley spotted a long ball in advance of Meade who reacted quickly for a 1 v 1 with GK Duncan, Meade flicked the bouncing ball over Duncan’s head and rounded her to smash in the back of the net. City were getting a lot of success with Robson who since signing for City has been coming back from injury and is just starting to pick up minutes and looking dangerous. Another great move from Robson saw her flick a little ball round the corner to Meade who then rolled the ball in behind the full back for Robson to run onto, the delivery went to the back post where Sweetman-Kirk was coming in to head home for City’s 4th. The Foxes had the upper hand during this period and looked rampant every time they attacked, 3 minutes after providing for Sweetman-Kirk, Jones combined with Robson who then got at the Hatters back line and drove into the box on the bye line before picking out Skipper Stowell on the edge of the box, travelling in Stowell hit first time giving Duncan no chance to stop the shot to round off City’s scoring. Luton didn’t give up and found another attack in the last few minutes with McEntaggart playing a well weighted cross into Michelle Byrne who headed wide. A good performance by City who now move to the top of the table, and pleasing that Lekeisha Gumbs is ok after her head injury. With a busy week ahead City entertain Leicester City Ladies at Friar Lane, Knighton Lane East, LE2 6FT on Wednesday 23rd September 7.45pm ko in the County Cup as current Champions, followed by a trip to Aston Villa on Sunday 27th September.

Squad – Leanne Hall, Leah Rawle, Hannah Williams, Zira Handley, Lekeisha Gumbs, Katie McLoughlin, Chloe Jones, Rachel Stowell, Courtney Sweetman-Kirk, Natalie Reay, Katie Lowder, Natasha Meade, Kirsty Robson, Nicole Dale.
